80 to lose jobs at Hadley Shopfitters

One of Portsmouth’s longest standing businesses, Hadley Shopfitters, has announced it will be making 80 of its staff redundant. Having traded for more than 90 years, and with contracts with John Lewis and Harvey Nichols, the company has decided to axe jobs.

Two young apprentices and staff members were called into the companies head office where the news was broken yesterday.

Southampton - bucking the youth unemployment trend

A new report shows Southampton is bucking the trend when it comes to youth unemployment in the area. Many cities across the UK are suffering from more than 25% of 16-24 year olds not in full time employment. Southampton, however, was found to have less than 13% in a study carried out by Work Foundation.

Plans for Biomass Power Station Unveiled

UK-based Helius Energy unveiled the design of a new biomass power station to mixed reviews by the nearby residents of Southampton. The 450 construction jobs and 40 permanent ones provided by the plant were welcomed, but the design received unflattering comments. Many residents complained of the boxy industrial look, while some questioned the pollution effects of a wood-fueled plant.

Airport Jobs Fair Takes Off

Southampton Airport announced today opening for 100 new positions at the Hampshire travel hub and was immediately inundated with over 5,000 applicants clamoring for the jobs.

HR director Caroline Morton said, “We were really surprised to see so many people show up. We really weren’t expecting so many applicants”.
