Further calls for BAE Systems to halt redundancies

Union leaders are calling for the spate of redundancies at Portsmouth’s shipbuilding facility to be put on hold until after Scottland’s independence referendum. Although 940 jobs were confirmed as being axed last November, Michael Fallon has been put under pressure to encourage BAE Systems to wait until after September and the future use of the shipbuilding facility has been decided.

It’s being reported in the media today that Portsmouth based BAE Systems' employees are facing 940 job cuts due to escalating costs of two new aircraft carriers currently under construction.

BAE announced the possibility of job losses after speculation started to filter through over the past few days.

The £2m refurbishment of a Morrisons supermarket, located at Anchorage Park Portsmouth, has created 30 new in store job positions.

The plans for the new layout also includes a public facing Craft Skills Academy. With training apprentices in traditional trades such as butcher, fish mongery and baker, the academy aims to give young people more opportunity.
